Since I use my sketchbooks solely for class work, I do my casual doodling on white letter-sized bond paper. Since the supply is limited, I tend to draw on every available space, and usually squeeze four or five separate doodles into a single page. The above is a sample of the kind of crap you’ll come across in the aforementioned papers: purely sketchy, impromptu stuff. Clockwise from top: 1) the original draft for the “strip poker” sketch; I canned this one because I realized that I needed Sango on the furthermost left since she had the first word balloon. 2) Kiddie Miroku and Sango! This one was inspired by a suggestion from in the “Ideas” section; I wasn’t able to come up with a more amusing scene for them—I’m still working on it—but I couldn’t resist the temptation to see my own rendition of the concept. 3) Miroku’s been referred to repeatedly as furyou houshi—rogue priest—and I wanted to draw him looking more of a rogue than a priest. He usually has a relatively neat hairstyle, but unbind that hair and I think it’s a whole different ball game.
